FCC Licensed broadcast applications involve authorized use
of frequencies on the AM (kHz) and FM (mHz) bands and are operated
by commercial, community and government entities. Licensed stations
are ruled by FCC Parts 73 and 90. Station licenses cost anywhere
between several thousand and several million dollars. Licensed
AM and FM stations generally operate on thousands of watts, cover
large geographic areas and involve one of the following formats:
- Music
- News/Talk
- Community Events Sports
- Traveler's Information
- Weather
- Religious

FCC Unlicensed broadcast applications are covered under Part
15 of the FCC Rules and also utilize frequencies on the AM (kHz)
and FM (mHz) bands. As long as operation is within FCC guidelines,
an unlicensed station can be started by nearly anyone for almost
any reason. Popular applications include College and Community
Radio, Drive-In Movies, Sports Arenas, Theme Parks and Special
Events. Unlicensed operations generally cover limited areas and
use one of the following technologies:
- AM Vertical Antenna
- AM Carrier Current
- FM / AM Radiating Cable
- FM Wire Antenna
- Cable TV
- Internet Radio
