LICENSED UNLICENSED

FCC Licensed broadcast applications involve authorized use of frequencies on the AM (kHz) and FM (mHz) bands and are operated by commercial, community and government entities. Licensed stations are ruled by FCC Parts 73 and 90. Station licenses cost anywhere between several thousand and several million dollars. Licensed AM and FM stations generally operate on thousands of watts, cover large geographic areas and involve one of the following formats:

- Music
- News/Talk
- Community Events Sports
- Traveler's Information
- Weather
- Religious

FCC Unlicensed broadcast applications are covered under Part 15 of the FCC Rules and also utilize frequencies on the AM (kHz) and FM (mHz) bands. As long as operation is within FCC guidelines, an unlicensed station can be started by nearly anyone for almost any reason. Popular applications include College and Community Radio, Drive-In Movies, Sports Arenas, Theme Parks and Special Events. Unlicensed operations generally cover limited areas and use one of the following technologies:

- AM Vertical Antenna
- AM Carrier Current
